Tantalo Hotel has become an internationally recognized tourist attraction and routinely receives international awards and press. Since opening in January 2012, the roofbar has become one of the top nightlife destinations in Central America. In the first year of operation alone the Tantalo Hotel won eight hospitality awards. The rotating menu of ‘tapas with a twist’ has become a favorite for brunch, lunch and breakfast for Casco locals and the restaurant is always packed with a trendy and hip crowd for dinner and international guests. Blesso Properties supports the arts in Casco Viejo by continually hosting performance artists, visual artists and musicians as they display their talents in a rotating calendar of events.
Originally founded in 1672, Casco Viejo is a UNESCO Heritage site and the historic district of Panama City. Blesso Properties purchased a run-down building a few blocks from the Presidential Palace in 2008 with the intention of creating Panama City’s first true boutique hotel. The hotel features a significant food and beverage component complete with a seventy-seat restaurant, bar and lounge area in the building’s magnificent atrium space and a roof bar that offers the best view in Casco Viejo. The design imposes a modern, eclectic twist to the building while still paying homage to the historic detailing of the surrounding buildings. Housed in the property’s four story atrium is Panama’s first green wall, a collection of 983 plants mounted vertically up the atrium. Additionally, wood construction from the lounge seating area as well as the roof-bar decking was reclaimed directly from the Panama Canal. During the development process, Blesso Properties recognized the young, emerging art culture in Casco Viejo and the rest of Panama City and commissioned twelve up-and-coming local artists each to design a hotel room along with select public and private spaces throughout the building. The experiment produced twelve striking, uniquely crafted guest suites, each providing a very different experience.
The commitment to local artists has been well received by both the creative class and Panama’s dignitaries and Tantalo is widely recognized as a cultural icon and contributing member of the community at large as well as a vibrant nightlife center.
